What is HackerTube?
HackerTube is a free website that collects the YouTube videos Hacker News commenters keep recommending to each other, from conference talks and lecture series to little-known documentaries. Andrej Karpathy prompted the project, and Claude Opus 5.5 built the data pipeline, search and site in Claude Code. It is for developers and curious readers who want talks with a long shelf life instead of a feed tuned for watch time.
How to Use HackerTube
Open hackertube.org and start from Home, which mixes HN classics, hidden gems with few views, recent favorites and topics you have not explored. Hover over a video to see why it was picked. Use the search box for a subject such as distributed systems; search matches topics, so it can find talks that never use those words.
Browse the Categories page or a ready-made playlist, and open any video to read the actual Hacker News comments about it, with links back to each thread. Like, Watch later and History work without an account, and likes steer what Home shows next. Press ? to see keyboard shortcuts.
Key Features
- Curated from HN comments 6,454 videos drawn from 39,834 labeled Hacker News comments posted between 2007 and 2026.
- AI-written video cards Each video has a summary, why HN readers like it, its type and whether it has aged well.
- Topic search 150 topics in 16 areas power semantic search and similar-video suggestions.
- No accounts Likes, history and Watch later stay in your browser, and videos play through YouTube's privacy-enhanced embed.
- Open data A 17.8 MB zip with videos, labeled comments, topics and search vectors can be downloaded under ODC-By 1.0.
Why Choose HackerTube?
A video only made the list if at least three different people linked it with real commentary in at least three different months, so one-off links drop out. Ranking rewards videos recommended again and again over the years rather than one viral spike. Claude also read each comment to tell a recommendation apart from a citation, a joke or a criticism.
Use Cases and Applications
A software engineer can build a weekend watch list on compilers or databases with the thread context attached. Teachers and team leads can pull classic talks for a reading group. Developers can give the data zip, which ships with a DATA.md written for agents, to Claude Code and ask for a weekly email of new talks on their topics or a terminal browser.
