What is Day Trader Skill?
Day Trader Skill is a free, MIT-licensed set of 11 Claude skills for researching and planning intraday stock trades, published on GitHub by Jake Schincariol as the day-trading follow-up to his earlier Trader skill. It scans charts, reads news and filings, sizes positions and simulates outcomes inside Claude. It is not an automatic trading bot: orders go out only after you approve each one, and the author states it is not financial advice.
How to Use Day Trader Skill
In Claude Code, add the plugin with /plugin marketplace add Jakeschincariol/day-trader-skill and install day-trader-skill from it. You can also clone the repo and copy the trader-* folders into ~/.claude/skills. It needs Python 3.8 or newer and no pip installs. For the SEC tools, put your name and email as a user agent in trader/config.json or the SEC_USER_AGENT variable.
Ask Claude to scan for setups, then let trader-entry watch a chosen chart bar by bar and trader-exit set the stop and target before entry. If you connect Alpaca's MCP server, trader-broker shows the ticket in plain words and waits for your yes. Paper trading is the default, and the README recommends setting the broker tool to Needs approval.
Key Features
- Setup scanner Looks across thousands of charts for opening-range breakouts, flags and oversold bounces.
- Risk and budget checks trader-risk blocks trades that break your limits, and trader-budget sizes positions to your maximum loss per trade.
- Time Machine Runs 10,000 simulated sessions plus past occurrences of a setup, based on 60 days of data.
- News, earnings and filings Separate skills flag breaking news, summarize earnings and read congressional trade disclosures.
- Approval-gated orders No order is placed without an explicit yes, and the paper account is used by default.
Why Choose Day Trader Skill?
It splits a day-trading routine into small skills you can read and change, rather than a closed app. It needs no signup or API key for market data and uses Yahoo Finance charts, Nasdaq Trader symbol lists, SEC EDGAR and the House Clerk. The README is frank about limits: Yahoo data can lag or be rate-limited, stops can fill beyond their price in fast markets, and most day traders lose money.
Use Cases and Applications
A trader can use it to build a morning watch list and write down entry, stop and target before the open. Learners can practice on the paper account and compare their plans with Time Machine simulations. Developers can study how a multi-skill Claude workflow passes data between skills and adapt it to their own research.
