What is Herdr?
Herdr is a free, open-source desktop app for running coding agents such as Claude Code and Codex side by side. The agents run in herdr-core, a small server on your own machine, so they keep working after you close the window. It is aimed at developers who juggle several agent sessions across repos and machines. It is a different project from Herd, a similarly named agent orchestrator listed on Product Hunt.
How to Use Herdr
Download the Mac app from herdr.dev, or paste the install command into a terminal on macOS or Linux; Windows has its own PowerShell command. Both installers download and run code, so read the script before you run it. Open a space for each repo and a tab for each task, then start any agent that runs in a terminal inside a pane.
The sidebar marks which agent is working, done or waiting on you. To add a server, VM or cloud sandbox, connect it over SSH and its spaces appear under its name. To change the app itself, ask your agent: layouts, keys, themes and mods live as plain files in ~/.config/herdr-app, with an AGENTS.md that explains them.
Key Features
- Agents survive the window Quitting or updating the app leaves every agent running in herdr-core.
- Status at a glance Agents that speak OSC 7501, an open status protocol, report whether they are working, done or blocked.
- Agents that run agents The hc command lets one agent start a helper, steer it and receive its report in its own input.
- One sidebar for every machine Remote machines join over SSH and show up next to local spaces.
- Shaped by asking Your agent can rewrite the layout, sidebar, tabs and themes, and users share their layouts and mods in a public gallery.
Why Choose Herdr?
A plain terminal or tmux setup loses track of which agent needs attention, and closing it can end the session. Herdr separates the agents from the window and shows their state in one place. It does not lock you into one vendor: Claude Code, Codex and a custom script all run the same way. The app, herdr-core and the older Herdr TUI are all under the Apache 2.0 license, so teams can read the code or build their own front end on herdr-core.
Use Cases and Applications
A developer can keep one agent tightening website copy while another writes tests in a different repo, and switch only when the sidebar flags a blocked task. A team with a build server can run long agent jobs there over SSH and watch them from a laptop. Agent builders can have a lead agent hand a code review to Codex and continue working until the review report arrives.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Herdr free?
Yes. The app, herdr-core and Herdr TUI are open source under Apache 2.0, and the site lists no paid plan.
Which systems does Herdr run on?
macOS on Apple silicon, Linux on x86_64 and arm64, and Windows on x86_64. Other machines can join over SSH whatever they run.
What is the difference between Herdr and Herdr TUI?
Herdr TUI is the original terminal app with its own server. The new desktop app is a separate program built on herdr-core, and the two do not share agents.
What happens to my agents after a reboot?
Panes come back with a shell in the same folder, but Herdr does not restart an agent or resume its work. You start the agent again.
